My so called "choice"

I've seen a lot of arguments lately that homosexuality is a choice.  Funny, I don't recall being asked if I wanted to be straight or gay.  What, did they give us a questionnaire or something?  I must have been really young, cuz I don't remember anything like that.

People who argue that homosexuality is a choice must think we're the dumbest people in the world.  Or that we enjoy pain.  Why would we choose to be something that would make us get harassed in school?  Why would we choose to be the targets of others hatred?  It makes absolutely no sense.

As human beings we naturally want to fit in.  If we're not part of the pack, then we're other and not to be trusted.  Who wants that?  I'm different for reasons other than personal choice I assure you.  I was lucky enough to be born into a tolerant family, so this argument doesn't apply to me.  But others like me aren't so lucky.  Their loved ones are disgusted by what they are, and apparently think they chose to be that way.  Why would someone choose to be reviled by their own family?

In short, they wouldn't.  If given the choice, I would never choose to be hated by a sizable portion of the world population.  No one would.

This argument ties into the arguments against anti-bullying policies in schools.  Some people think that if the facts about homosexuality are taught in schools to combat bullying, that we'll actively recruit the younguns into our lifestyle.

Umm... recruit?  Last time I checked I wasn't recruited by anyone.  The Marine recruiters at my college don't even pay me any attention.  And yet here I am, proudly flyin the rainbow flag.  (When I say someone is "flyin the rainbow flag" I mean that s/he is quite obviously gay).  I wasn't "recruited" by anyone.

And if I wouldn't choose to be harassed for what I am, why would I try to recruit others to be harassed as well?  I wouldn't.  I'm not that cruel (unless I don't like you).

I've come to the conclusion that people that think these things have never heard of a little thing called logic.  Because their arguments are completely devoid of it.  I like to think that my logic-dar is at least as well developed as my gay-dar (I have a pretty good one) and it registers a field strength of 0 logic-units whenever I read those arguments.
